hanovarien-model-1815-43-percussion-cap-cavalry-pistol
Hanovarien Model 1815/43 Percussion Cap Cavalry Pistol

19th Century German Cavalry Pistol Of A Flintlock New Land Pattern Converted By Crause Of Herzberg

I've been led to believe that this is quite a scarce item and was meant as the Cavalry Pattern pistol intended to replace the older flintlock British Land Pattern Light Dragoon pistols.

The internet hasn't been very helpful in my research but I suppose, that at least does lean into the scarcity of this model.

There appears to be two models, the 1806/43 and the 1815/43 although some references suggest that they are one and the same ........... I am not sure that I agree as although this piece shares a lot of features with the British Dragoon New Land pistol, the butt is very different.

It is a handsome piece with clean browned steelwork and brass furniture that is unpolished.

The 22.5cm barrel has a swivel ramrod, leaf foresight and has no visible proof marks. I am guessing that they are below the stock line, but I haven't attempted to strip the piece to look.

The lock is stepped at the tail and signed in script "Crause Herzberg" and stamped with an Inspection Stamps of S and a Cross.

The frizen spring from its flintlock days has been retained as the spring for a nipple cover safety catch and this along with the action is crisp in its operation.

The mainspring is smooth and strong.

There is a very effective strengthening repair consisting of a brass plate fixed where the ramrod enters the stock. This was a common place for the stock to split and I believe that this may be an Arsenal repair carried out during its service.

The trigger guard and Eliott type sideplate both carry the S and Cross Inspection Stamps, although the forend cap and buttcap do not.

The walnut stock carries a few bruises and a little damage around one of the pins, but apart from the brass repair plate area, there are no splits or cracks visible.

A very interesting German Military piece.

Barrel length 22.4cm, Overall lenght 37cm.

This antique pistol is considered obsolete and non functioning, and is sold as a collectable, ornamental item.
