Egg

An interesting one this, that could possibly be a 1794 or 1770/03/7 Pattern Light Dragoon flintlock pistol that has been later converted to percussion cap.

Durs Egg (1745-1831), a highly accomplished Gunmaker who trained in Switzerland and Paris set up his business in London in 1772 and his skill quickly put him in the same stable as the other notable Gunmakers of the time. He eventually became Gunmaker to the Prince of Wales and King George IV.

It was whilst looking into Durs Egg and military pistols that I stumbled upon a comment in the book "British Ordnance Single Shot Pistols" (that I highly recommend by the way) that mentioned that Contractors, including Durs Egg and Henry Nock may have had orders to produce the 1794 Pattern. This one doesn't have a 10" barrel as some 1794 Pattern pieces do, but it is a touch over 9" so perhaps it is another variant of the 1794 which is mentioned in this book or 1770/03/07 Pattern as the dimensions match almost perfectly (I'll list them later).

More about the pistol itself;

The steelwork is in great condition with a smooth dark grey patina, although the barrel has a couple of small but deep scratches in it.

The lockplate carries the Crown over GR and is signed at the tail D. Egg.

The barrel carries the Tower Proof Marks and a further Crown (Inspection Stamp?), it is also signed "D Egg London".

The mainspring is strong and the action is crisp in both half and full position.

The walnut stock is likewise in good condition and has a smooth and rich feel to it, making it a rather tactile piece overall.

A handsome military piece by a famous London maker.

Dimensions

1794 Pattern: Barrel 9.25", Calibre 0.67, Length 15.5", Lock size 5.4 x 1"

1770/03/7 Pattern: Barrel 9.1", Calibre 0.67, Length 15.5", Lock size 54 x 1"

This pistol: Barrel 9.1", Calibre 0.67, Length 15.25", Lock size 5.4 x 1".

This antique pistol is considered obsolete and non functioning, and is sold as a collectable ornamental item.
