Mid 19th Century English Sea Service Percussion Cap Pistol Of The 1842 Pattern, Heavily Stamped And Dated 1849
Developed for the Royal Navy by the Inspector of Small Arms for the British Board of Ordnance, George Lovell (1787-1863).
This along with other types of small arms bearing the name 1842 pattern saw a complete departure from previous percussion cap Military firearms, no more use of old stock converted to percussion cap. These were purpose built made to mid 19th Century standards.
The steelwork on this piece is in great shape and has a clean steel patina.
The lock is clearly stamped with the Crown VR with Tower 1849 beneath that. There is also the Crowned Broad Arrow stamp.
The mainspring is strong and the action is super crisp in half and full positions.
The barrel has no less than 6 ordnance stamps including Crown Broad Arrows, Crowned TI over Broad Arrow, Crown over 7 and 17.
The fitted belt hook is stamped as is the ramrod. Considering it is over 175 years old the stock has also done remarkably well showing just age related bruises and scars.
This part of the pistol also received attention from the Inspectors Stamps with 3 located on the right of the grip, the Board of Ordnance and Broad Arrow on the left of the grip and more lettering and numbers on the left side under the belt hook. The surname 'Evans' is stamped there too.
A stocky and attractive Military pistol in great condition.
