19th Century 7mm Pinfire Pepperbox Revolver With An Unusual Safety Catch
An undecorated, but very clean example of a pinfire pepperbox revolver.
The metalwork is unpitted and has a smooth even aged patina.
The loading gate lifts upwards and it clips into place tightly, and on the other side of the hammer is a simple, but very effective safety catch patented by Maurice Arendt (1866) in the form of a sliding bar that will slide in front of the hammer, keeping it away from the pin.
There is a serial number 8804 at the forend on the left hand side and what appears to be a badly struck proof or inspection mark on the end of the cylinder. It's not a Belgian Proof Mark, but maybe a Birmingham Proof? I can't tell.
The mainspring is good and the double action cycles and strikes correctly.
The folding trigger works correctly and its ejector rod screws into the 2 piece wooden bag shaped grip, which is smooth and in good condition with a rich colouration.
A plain, but handsome firearm.
Barrels (cylinder) length 4.5cm, overall length 12cm.
This antique pistol is considered obsolete and non functioning, and is sold as a collectable ornamental item. This product is available for purchase in the UK without a license
