19th Century Full Stocked And Brass Mounted Pair Of Percussion Cap Pistols
A good looking matching pair of either Duelling or Target Pistols with horn tipped full stocks, which are nicely shaped and carved.
The brass (or bronze) mounts have a beautiful patina and show the remains of gilding in some area and with regards to the steelwork they retain much of their original dark case hardening patina.
The steel octagonal to round barrels show some signs of the surface corrosion and have engraved decoration at the breech and barrel tang.
The locks are completely free of any decoration and are not signed, but the mainsprings are good and on both pistols the actions are smooth in both half and full position, although I get the impression that they have been left unused and unloved for some time.
The stocks are also in good condition with a few bruises evident, however, there is a bit of damage around the brass buttcap of one of the pistols (see photos) and there are a couple of tiny splits around one of the locks.
The style of these pieces are most definitely Continental, but without removing the locks or barrels for further markings I cannot be sure of the Country of origin, and that is something that I am reluctant to do given how original they look and feel.
Both have horn tipped wooden ramrods that, given their colouration, look original.
A lovely honest pair of pistols.
Barrel lengths 20.5cm, Overall length 34cm.
This antique pistol is considered obsolete and non functioning, and is sold as a collectable item. This product is available for purchase in the UK without a license
