An early 19th Century Pair Of Flintlock Pocket Pistols By Ketland In A Later Fitted Case With Accessories
A crisp pair of pocket pistols with top sliding safety catches, signed within cartouches surrounded by Stand of Arms decorations " T Ketland & Co" on the left side and "London" on the right.
They are also stamped KW & A which helps to date these pistols even further. KW&A stands for Ketland, Walker & Adams, which places them in a fairly narrow timeframe when John Adams was taken into partnership and before William Walker retired, possibly 1814-1815.
The metalwork has a dark gun metal patina and there is no sign of corrosion.
The engraving, although not intricate, is crisp.
The mainsprings are strong and the action in both half and full positions are very good indeed.
Both barrels unscrew cleanly.
The slab sided one piece walnut grips are also in great condition with no shrinkage and hardly any bruising evident on the sides although there are a few little 'dinks' on the base of the grips.
The accessories consist of a small brass tipped rammer and a small brass powder flask, (which is in fairly good shape having only 1 tiny dent and there is also a small split along a seam and the very tip of the spring is broken, which means that the brass lever doesn't engage).
These items along with the pistols are all kept within a fitted green baise lined hardwood case, which although more modern that its contents, is actually a very nice dovetail jointed box.
A nicely presented, handsome set of pistols by a famous maker.
