Mid 19th Century English Side By Side Sporting Gun Signed Nixon In Its Fitted Mahogany Case With Accessories
A fine quality sporting gun made by David Nixon of Newark (1829-1864) in its pig skin lined mahogany fitted case with 8 compartments, 6 of which are lidded and 3 of those are sectioned.
They contain;
The beautiful browned twist barrel (I think this my be rebrowned)
The stock
A large amount of bird shot
Matching shot and powder flask by Dixon (action seized on the powder flask)
Percussion cap nipple wrench
Percussion Cap Tin
Brockedon patented end caps and wadding
Wad cutter
The piece has lovely brown twist barrels which are London Proofed and have original nipples. The barrel is faintly signed "Nixon Gunmaker Newark" along the central rib, but being faint and the twist being so good is what makes me think it has been redone, very lovely nevertheless.
The rest of the steel furniture is profusely and intricately foliate and scroll engraved and feature hunting scenes on the lock, trigger guard and on the top of the buttcap.
The mainspring is good and the actions are both crisp and smooth in half and full position.
The walnut stock is in great condition except for some old cracks at the shoulder which have been well repaired at some point.
