Mid 19th Century Percussion Cap Bar Hammer Bootleg Pistol By The American Manufacturer Allen & Wheelock.
With steelwork that is dark grey with smoothed edges and foliate engraving to the body.
The top flat of the octagonal section of the barrel is stamped "Allen & Wheelock" and the bar hammer has "Patented April 16 1845"
The underside of the barrel is stamped "24".
The two piece walnut grip is in good condition with no shrinkage and no cracking, although there are a couple of bruises, as you would expect.
The mainspring is strong and the double action is crisp.
There is some minor pitting to the barrel.
This type of pistol was also known as the No9 Single Shot Self Cocking Pistol and was an important part of Allens' business and I believe continued in production up until 1865 and were popular during the Gold Rush and Civil War periods.
An interesting piece by a well known American maker.
