Mid 19th Century 0.54" Calibre English Sidehammer Boxlock Travelling Pistol In Its Fitted Case
An attractive oak case with brass fittings and green felt lined compartments containing a relatively short barrelled sidehammer boxlock percussion pistol with associated accessories (percussion cap tin, oil bottle, turnscrew, powder flask and shot).
The pistol is unsigned but is finely engraved and has a swivel ramrod which tucks snuggly under the barrel.
The barrel is octagonal, engraved at the muzzle and carries Birmingham Proof Marks.
The one piece wooden grip is in lovely condition with no shrinkage, splits or cracks and is finely hatched across its entirety.
It has a steel buttcap with a sprung hinged compartment for spare percussion caps.
The steelwork is in good condition with a smooth finish and just a couple of areas showing some minor signs of corrosion.
The mainspring is strong and the action is crisp in both half and full position (half position being set just off the nipple).
The case is in good condition too with the lining being intact and the base also having the green felt.
It has 2 brass sliding catches as well as a central lock (unfortunately there is no key).
The old bottle is very clean and unscrews as it should, the cap tin has a damaged R Joyce label and contains a few caps.
The ebony? handled turnscrew is on the small side for its compartment but it is also in good condition, but it is unnamed as is the powder flask which is also in good condition and operates as it should.
There is also a few shot in the lidded compartment and what may be wadding material in another open compartment.
Finally the lid shows the brass screwheads around the perimeter and carries a blank circular brass escutcheon, it closes fully and engages with the brass catches.
A good looking cased set.
