19th Century Percussion Cap 0.7 Calibre Double Barreled Swiss Signed Howdah Pistol

A large military calibre double barreled percussion cap pistol of over and under configuration, with damascus twist barrels signed along the top barrel P Hermann Aarberg.

The metalwork is relatively free of decoration, except for a nice border engraving.

The barrels are in beautiful condition with no pitting or staining and all metal parts are free of pitting with a nice grey patina.

The steel buttcap has a hinged compartment for percussion caps and a lanyard ring.

The hinged cap has been broken in the past and brazed back on, which has left it slightly out of line when closed.

There are several stamps on the barrels; 175, 34, 22, L, and a Proof Mark that I cannot identify.  I believe that the L is an inspection mark for Inspector Ledermann.

The mainsprings are strong and both actions are crisp in both half and full positions.

The woodwork is in good condition with a lovely dark aged colour.  There is evidence of cross hatching, but it has nearly all worn smooth!  This piece has been handled a great deal during its life.

I have been unable to find any information on P Hermann of Aarberg (the internet seems convinced that I need to look at Hermann Historica, which is a European Auction House!!)  Something for the purchaser to investigate.

An interesting and unusual piece.

Barrel length 13.5cm, overall length 30cm.

This antique pistol is considered obsolete and non functioning, and is sold as a collectable ornamental item. This product is available for purchase in the UK without a license
