Early 19th Century English Flintlock Double Barrelled Pistol Signed Spencer, London.

A very neat little tap action flintlock pistol with concealed trigger in a bright steel finish.

Engraved with stand of arms decoration on both sides of the lock with Spencer on one side and London on the other within oval cartouches.

A very clean example, both barrels unscrew and the tap, frizen, top sliding safety catch and hidden trigger all operate as they should.

The mainspring is strong and the action is crisp in both half and full position.

The barrels themselves are unmarked, except for the numbers 2 and 3, but the body of the pistol has clear Birmingham Proof Marks, including a "Tombstone" makers mark, and adjacent to each barrel the numbers 2 and 3.

The slab sided walnut grip is also in great shape with only the expected shallow bruises, but no splits, cracks or chips.

It seems that there were 2 Spencer's operating in London, but there was over one hundred years between them.  James Spencer was a London Gunmaker from the late 17th Century, so it definitely wasn't made by him, which leaves Thomas Spencer who made pistols in the early 19th Century working in Mile End, Old Town and then later Duke Street, Southwark.

A quite lovely little piece.

Barrel lengths 4cm, overall length 14.5cm.

This antique pistol is considered obsolete and non functioning, and is sold as a collectable ornamental item. This product is available for purchase in the UK without a license
