Early 18th Century English Full Stocked Flintlock Pistol Lock Signed Sheppard

A very attractive early flintlock pistol with engraved brass mounts and a lovely pierced brass sideplate.

The steel octagonal to round barrel is engraved London along the top flat and has London Proof Marks.  it is also stamped with the barrel makers mark, which is this case is John Shorey who was active during the late 17th Century and early 18th Century.

The steelwork is in nice condition being clean with some salt and pepper corrosion to the barrel.

The brasswork is clean and unpolished and the engraved decoration is clear.

The stepped and bevelled lock is engraved only with a border design and very clearly named Sheppard.

To sit correctly with the barrel makers stamp I believe that the maker was John Sheppard who was apprenticed to John Craddock in 1702 and was free of the Joiners Co in 1709 (taken from the St Dunstan, Stepney register, Greater London Record Office).

It has a horn tipped wooden ramrod that sits snuggly in place.

The mainspring is good and the action is smooth and crisp in half and full position.

The walnut stock is in great condition with just a few bruises.  It has a carved apron around the barrel tang, ending in a shell type design and a large ornate brass escutcheon at the shoulder, which is blank.

A beautiful early flintlock that sits nicely in the hand.

Barrel length 15cm, Overall length 30cm.

This antique pistol is considered obsolete and non functioning, and is sold as a collectable ornamental item. This product is available for purchase in the UK without a license
