Late 18th Century French M1777 Cavalry Flintlock Pistol From The Maubeuge Arsenal
An interesting design of flintlock pistol produced in France for its Cavalry and were issued in pairs.
It was made in large numbers and many were exported to America for use in their War of Independence and it later became the blueprint for Americas first official model of firearms, the 1799.
It was in production for approximately 13 years from 1779 from manufacturing plants in St Etienne, Charleville and Maubeuge.
Although this is one of the earlier types that featured a belt hook , it is now missing.
As well as the name of the Manufacturing Plant this one has several poorly struck Inspection Stamps on the brasswork.
This one has had a tough life and been exposed to the elements showing signs of corrosion and pitting across much of the steelwork, although the brasswork by its very nature has fared much better.
The walnut stock is also in pretty good shape, although there is a piece missing by the pan and bruises that you would expect from a pistol of this age.
It has a ramrod and although it fits well I believe that it is a replacement.
The mainspring is good and the action is fine in half and full position.
An iconic French Military pistol of a type that saw action in many conflicts.
Barrel length 19cm, Overall length 33.5cm.
This antique pistol is considered obsolete and non functioning, and is sold as a collectable ornamental item. This product is available for purchase in the UK without a license
