Early 19th Century Flintlock Greatcoat Pistol With A French Style Cock Made By G Pepper Of Dublin
A handsome little full stocked Greatcoat/Overcoat pistol of walnut and polished steel with a brass trigger guard, ramrod pipe and ramrod tip.
The metalwork is in nice condition with a little staining and only minor pitting.
The stepped lock is signed G. Pepper and carries quality features, such as a roller frizen spring and a semi rainproof pan.
The 8.5 cm octagonal barrel has a blade foresight and the top flat is stamped Dublin and D-N 4161 which is the Irish licencing registration number, which was brought in after the Irish Registration Act of 1843 (it didn't last long and stopped in 1846). D-N is the County or Borough prefix and in this case is for Down, followed by a 3 or 4 digit number.
The mainspring is good and the action is crisp in both half and full position.
George Pepper was a Gunmaker located at 1 Abbey Street and later moved to 25 Chapel Street around 1835. He operated from around 1828-1836, but his Father (also George Pepper) was also a Gunmaker and worked from around 1750-1800.
My thoughts are that this is a later flintlock piece and was made by George Junior early in his career.
I really like this type of pistol, a solid no nonsense piece.
Barrel length 8.5cm, Overall length 18.5cm
