Early 19th Century English Rifled Flintlock Tap Action Pistol Engraved "W Jones" And "London"
A substantial over and under flintlock tap action travelling or overcoat pistol, engraved with Stand of Arms decoration on either side of the body with W Jones within an oval cartouche on the left and London on the right.
The underside of the body next to the barrels is stamped with post 1813 Birmingham Proofs and a further Makers Mark IR with a Crown over it.
The trigger guard has clear and floral engraving and the large oval silver (white metal) escutcheon at the shoulder carries the finely engraved emblem of an acorn.
Both barrels (interestingly marked 15 and 16) unscrew cleanly and are rifled.
The mainspring is strong and the action is crisp in both half and full position.
All other moving parts such as the frizen spring, top mounted safety catch and tap action all operate smoothly.
The bag shaped one piece walnut grip is finely crossed hatched and in great condition with only a couple of bruises and no splits, cracks or shrinkage.
The William Jones Gunmaking family started in Birmingham 1811 at 86 Lichfield Street and continued for three generations of William Jones until 1900.
William Jones Senior set the business up in 1811 and traded until 1819 when his son took over and moved to 23 Lench Street.
A handsome double barrelled flintlock pistol.
Barrel length 5.5cm, Overall length 19cm.
