Mid 19th Century English Percussion Cap Back Action Overcoat Pistol Signed Manton & Son With Double Line At The Breech
A good quality pistol with fine engraving, heavy octagonal twisted barrel, double line at the breech and a vent plug.
It is signed on the lock and on the barrel "Manton & Son", but my thoughts are that as fine as it is, it wasn't made by John Manton or even from his premises in London. I believe that it is a top quality Birmingham trade piece and to further elevate it "Manton & Son" was added to it.
Back to the pistol itself.
The thick walled damascus twist octagonal barrel is in lovely condition with the clear signature, fine engraving and double line at the breech.
The heavily engraved barrel tang, lock, in fact most of the steelwork retains much of its original colour with the notable exception of the trigger guard which has suffered from exposure to the elements.
The mainspring is good and the action is nice and smooth in both half and full position.
The horn tipped walnut stock is also in great condition with no splits or cracks and only age related surface bruising.
It has a crisp finely hatched grip and silver (white metal) escutcheon and barrel wedge surrounds. As highlighted in the video, the barrel wedge is a little loose.
Oh, did I say it was a lovely pistol?
Barrel length 12.5cm, Overall length 25cm.
