Mid 19th Century English Percussion Cap Carbine of 0.65" Calibre Signed Dickinson London
In lovely crisp condition, the barrel with Private London Proof Marks (quite rubbed) and the lock with Dickinson London engraved on it. I can find no other engravings or markings.
It is full stocked with a swivel ramrod, two brass ramrod pipes, brass forend cap, trigger guard and buttcap which all have an unpolished patina.
The steelwork has a very dark patina and is in great condition being smooth and showing no visual signs of corrosion.
The stock is likewise in lovely condition with no splits or cracks evident.
The mainspring is smooth and the action is super crisp in half and full position.
An interesting side to this piece comes from the signed lock as Dickinson seems to have been associated with custom or trial versions of longarms and he operated from many addresses including the Minories close to the Tower of London.
Herbert Dickinson was apprenticed to a William Hegley in 1811 and soon after to Thomas Potts. He established his own business in 1823 in Chamber Street, after which he moved many times until ending up in Union Row Minories at the end of 1861.
Is this a commission piece or even possibly a one off made for trials? Whatever the case it is a handsome military long arm in great condition.
Barrel length 53.5cm, Overall length 94cm.
