19th Century English 8 Shot Pepperbox Revolver By Witton Daw & Co, London
A scarce item this. A beast of an 8 shot 0.34 calibre percussion cap pepperbox revolver.
With fine foliate engraving to the body, hammer, trigger guard and buttcap. It is signed within scrolling on the left hand side Witton Daw & Co, London.
Between each chamber are (worn in some cases, but visible) London Proof Marks.
The metalwork is in overall good condition and a steel metal finish with a grey stain patina on all parts.
The mainspring is strong and the double action works well with the barrel cluster rotating correctly.
The one piece walnut grip is very finely cross hatched, has a rectangular silver (white metal) escutcheon and the foliate engraved buttcap that features a hinged lid for storing spare percussion caps.
You can hear a tiny amount of lateral play in the barrel cluster when "wiggled" from side to side.
Witton Daw & Co was set up in 1851 at No 82 Old Broad Street, London and a year later moved to No 57 Threadneedle Street. In 1855 the Company name changed to Witton & Daw which means that this piece is from 1851-1855.
A rare and handsome piece by a quality maker.
Barrel length 8.5cm, overall length 22cm.
This antique pistol is considered obsolete and non functioning, and is sold as a collectable ornamental item. This product is available for purchase in the UK without a license
