19th Century 7mm 7 Shot Pinfire Revolver By Alexandre Fagnus engraved "Murcott Haymarket, London"
A very interesting, and not often seen Fagnus patent pocket pinfire revolver with its characteristic "bath plug" chain cylinder retainer attachment and cylinder removal mechanics.
There are vestiges of its original bluing, but mostly what remains is a pleasant grey/brown patina, and there is no pitting or corrosion.
Along the top of the frame is the name of the retailer "Murcott" and along the top of the barrel is the address "Haymarket London".
The barrel and cylinder are stamped with Birmingham Proof Marks and the decoration is a recognisable austere English double line that goes around the frame.
On the right of the frame is the Crown over FA, which I believe to be the stamp for Alexandre Fagnus, and there appears to be a serial number 154 on the barrel just in front of the cylinder.
The two piece bag shaped wooden grip is in great condition with crisp and tight cross hatching.
The Gunsmith Alexandre Fagnus had quite a long career alone and in partnership with others. He was the owner of seven revolver patents and was registered at 9 Lue des Celestines between 1870 and 1879. This particular patent was No 20234.
I believe Murcott to be the retailer/maker Theophilus Murcott and Sons of 68 Haymarket, London 1861-1878,
This is a double action only revolver (pulling on the spur of the hammer simply rotates the barrel) and although the action is good, the trigger return spring is not (as is so often the case with pinfire revolvers)
If anyone is interested the Royal Armouries have one of these pistols and discuss it on their YouTube channel.
A rare and interesting 7 shot revolver.
Barrel length 8cm, Overall length 17.5cm.
This antique pistol is considered obsolete and non functioning, and is sold as a collectable ornamental item. This product is available for purchase in the UK without a license
