Mid 19th Century Percussion Cap Bootleg Pistol Stamped "London"
A bar hammer single shot double action only bootleg pistol with a two piece wooden bag shaped grip.
It has the usual heavy walled octagonal to round turn off barrel (currently seized).
Popular during the Gold Rush and Civil War period in American history. They were designed as personal protection pistols and easily kept in the pocket or tucked into the top of a boot.
This one has a smooth dark grey steel finish with no pitting and foliate engraving to the body.
As is usual with these pieces there are no proof marks, but interestingly this one is stamped on the top flat of the barrel what looks like "Right South" (very rubbed and difficult to see) and underneath that "London". Is that London, England or Arkanses, Kentucky or Ohio?
There is no sign of any British Proof or Inspection Marks.
The double action only mechanism operates correctly and the mainspring is good.
The two piece bag shaped grip is also in good condition with no cracks, splits or shrinkage.
An interesting piece with the London stamp.
Barrel length 7.5cm, Overall 16cm.
This antique pistol is considered obsolete and non functioning, and is sold as a collectable ornamental item. This product is available for purchase in the UK without a license.
