Mid 19th Century Percussion Cap Cavalry Carbine/Pistol Model 1850 signed "PJ Malherbe & Co a Liege
A scarce and unusual Swedish Cavalry pistol with a monstrous barrel calibre of 0.79" (I found some online information indicating that it was meant to be loaded with six 9mm shot!)
The metalwork on this pistol is in pretty good condition, with only a small amount of corrosion to the barrel close to the muzzle and there is some staining.
The lock is stamped with a crowned M and it is signed "PJ Malherbe & Co a Liege".
The mainspring is strong and the action is smooth in full position (there is no half position).
The brass work is stamped with a circled H and there is also the serial number 1108 stamped on the buttcap and barrel.
From the barrel tang extends a steel spine with a socket which would accept a shoulder stock to turn this piece into a short carbine (unfortunately not present). The barrel is also stamped with the Liege Proof Mark and an M.
The woodwork is in good condition with the exception of a chip by the brass buttcap.
The stock is also stamped with the matching serial number plus a couple of others marks.
Very interestingly this one has a hallmarked silver presentation plaque dated 1947, and roughly translated I believe says "The Royal Life Regiment of Officers was awarded the honorary prize at the Equestrian Competitions 1947".
A final point of interest, I understand that the manufacturer PJ Malherbe was an important exporter of Arms to the North in the American Civil War.
A scarce and very interesting piece.
