19th Century Percussion Cap Military Pistol By T. Potts Haydon Square
A very unusual heavy short barreled military pistol by T. Potts of Haydon Square in London.
In great condition with regulation brass mounts and a swivel ramrod.
The stepped lock is clearly signed T. Potts Haydon Square and the mainspring is good, the action holding crisply in half and full position.
The barrel has London proof marks with a calibre of approx 0.65-0.67 and the woodwork carries the initials IS or SI on the left side just behind the military brass counter plate.
Overall the woodwork is in good condition with only one crack, just in front of the lock.
The unusual and scarce feature of this pistol however, is the shape of the walnut butt. I have only ever seen this style on one other pistol, which was an ordnance Bank of England piquet flintlock pistol.
Given that Potts was a well known military maker and with this pistols dimensions, it could have been a private commission for a Naval Officer?
It may be unique looking, but it is surprisingly comfortable to hold.
A scarce and honest piece worthy of further investigation.
Barrel length 15 cm, overall length 29.5cm.
This antique pistol is considered obsolete and non functioning, and is sold as a collectable item. This product is available for purchase in the UK without a license
