Mid 18th Century Italian Full Stocked Flintlock Travelling Pistol
A very attractive piece full stocked in walnut with brass furniture and inlaid panels to the barrel.
The engraved and relief decoration is extensive and consists of classical panels with different Roman type busts, the most prominent of which is on the trigger guard and is in high relief with a mottled background (known as Granitura) which makes it really stand out.
The octagonal to round barrel has 5 brass panels inlaid at the breech with the largest central one carrying another bust, and this type of design is carries on the steel finial of the brass buttcap, which has yet another brass bust inlaid in it.
Engraving to the brass escutcheon and sideplate show further busts, all of which points to the Tuscan Gunmakers.
The walnut full stock appears to be in great condition with the last 250 plus years giving it a lovely dark patina and smooth finish.
The lock, cock and frizen are all engraved with a mixture of floral, and what looks like a martial design.
The mainspring is good and the action is ok in half and full position, but (and I am not sure if this makes any sense on paper) it feels old and a little delicate after 250 to 275 years.
A very beautiful little pistol.
Barrel length 14cm, overall length 26cm.
This antique pistol is considered obsolete and non functioning, and is sold as a collectable, ornamental item. This product is available for purchase in the UK without a license
