Early 20th Century Nickel and Mother Of Pearl Velodog Revolver
Stunning example of this most unusual of revolvers.
With heavy foliate engraving across the whole of the body, frame and cylinder and signed Broqua and Scholberg Montevideo across the top frame.
The mainspring is strong and the double action is super crisp.
With only a couple of flakes missing, the nickel plating is close to 100% and except for a single chip, the mother of pearl grips are complete.
The barrel is rifled and has several clear proof/inspection stamps and at the top of the cylinder (behind the loading gate) has the Liege Proof Mark.
The trigger is a manual fold down design, and the cylinder pin ingeniously doubles as the ejector rod.
The maker Broqua and Scholberg was established in 1856 by Alfonso Broqua (from Montevideo) and Clementine Scholberg (from Liege) and the first weapons to come from Uruguay was in the late 1870's. These are apparently highly sought after.
The firm closed in 1936 but continued under another name "Casa Coqueiro"
The Velo-Dog was originally designed in France by Rene Galand to protect cyclists from dog attacks, hence the name velocipede and dog, and there was a wide range of ammunition available, including less lethal options, such as cayenne pepper or wax, wood or cork bullets.
A truly beautiful piece of interesting social history .
Barrel length 3.5cm, overall 13.5cm.
